Grill Salmon in Foil 1

A simple guide explaining how to grill salmon wrapped in foil. A few ingredients, a short cooking time, and little cleaning are needed for this easy salmon recipe.

I’ll be honest with you: grilled salmon is all I need to survive, if not thrive. Every time, there’s something about the crispy skin and smoky-charred flavor that makes my taste buds happy.

To be honest, my favorite way to prepare salmon is to drizzle it with a little avocado oil, season it with salt and pepper, and then cook it directly on the grill. You can check out my method in The Only Grilled Salmon Recipe You’ll Ever Need if, like me, you prefer the fish-to-grill approach.

Although I like to cook salmon without foil, I know there are many of you who like the taste of foil. If you like your salmon grilled in foil, I have the simplest little recipe for you. You’ll need some tin foil, oil, a lemon, some seasoning, and your salmon fillet. Not to be overlooked is salt.

Salmon cooked in a foil packet can be a practical method to free up grill space for dishes that need more heat if you’re grilling a lot of other things.

To cook, just place the packet directly over the burners or on the grill’s shelf next to dishes that require a high heat.

You can modify this recipe for BBQ salmon in foil to suit your own tastes by adding fresh garlic, your preferred herbs and spices, etc. It will be a crowd pleaser at your next BBQ!

Which Kind of Salmon Should I Use?

Any variety of salmon will do! Just make sure that the salmon is fully thawed before grilling if it was previously frozen.

Sockeye, king, choho, and Atlantic salmon are all fantastic fish. Because King or Atlantic salmon are fatter and consequently more tasty and tender, I personally prefer them.

How to Cook Salmon in Foil Grilling

Set your barbecue on fire! To minimize time when preparing the salmon, you should preheat the grill to medium-high, which is 400 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Collect your fillets of salmon. Though I feel the smaller fillets are easier to handle when taking from the grill, you can use any size.

Arrange them on an elongated piece of foil that is enough long to envelop the salmon in a sealed parcel.

Drizzle the fish with avocado (or olive) oil and season with sea salt and Italian (or other favorite) spices.

If you’re not a fan of lemon, feel free to omit the slices. Finally, encase everything in a charming little packaging.

After placing the package on the grill, cover it. Depending on the thickness of the salmon and the doneness you want, cook it for 10 to 12 minutes. That’s all you need to make foil-grilled salmon!

How long is salmon cooked in foil?

The FDA states that salmon is done when it reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooking salmon on a foil-covered grill usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

The best method to make sure your salmon is cooked through is to use a meat thermometer. To obtain an accurate reading, place the thermometer in the middle of the salmon’s thickest area.

Please be aware that when the salmon is taken off the grill, it will continue to cook. For optimal results, let it sit for ten minutes before serving!

Season Salmon:

There are tons of ways to perfectly season fish! We use sea salt and Italian seasoning in this dish. Garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika combined are also fantastic!

All you need to do is generously sprinkle your preferred seasonings onto the fish, and you’re set to go. Pepper with lemon? Outstanding choice as well.

Serving Ideas:

I enjoy serving this foil-wrapped salmon with a huge salad, my popular roasted veggies, or my simple stir-fried veggies. Try my Grilled Sweet Potatoes, Zucchini, and Yellow Squash with Pesto and Feta if you’d rather do all of your meal prep outside on the grill.

You can also go for potato salad (see my German-Style Potato Salad with Caramelized Onions) or pasta salad (see my Pasta Salad with Lemon Poppy Seed Dressing or Kale Pesto Pasta Salad).

As a dessert? I’m really liking the zesty fruit salad with basil and coconut milk. You’re in business if you sip Tropical White Sangria to wash it all down!

Ingredients

  • One-pound salmon fillet, divided into smaller portions
  • One tablespoon of oil from avocados
  • One-third tsp of Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt, adjusted to taste
  • One big lemon, cut into rounds

Instructions

  • Set your grill to medium-high heat and use a wire brush to remove any leftover food particles from your previous grilling session.
  • Lay down a large sheet of foil (or several sheets, if you want to grill the salmon fillets more easily). Drizzle with avocado oil, then work the oil into the salmon's meat with your hands. Add sea salt and Herbs de Provence, or Italian seasoning, on top. To make a foil package, place lemon slices over the salmon fillets and cover with foil.
  • After placing the foil packet on the grill, cover it. Simmer the salmon for ten to fifteen minutes, or until it reaches the desired doneness. The thickness of the salmon will determine how long it takes to cook.
  • To remove the foil packet from the grill and place it on a plate or cutting board, use tongs or a metal spatula. After it has cooled down enough to handle, remove the foil.
  • Serve salmon with your selection of sides.

Notes

Herbs de Provence or any other combination of dried herbs can also be used. Other tasty possibilities include paprika, ground cumin, onion powder, and garlic powder!
